Strong international experience, only twenty-three years, he became artistic director of Alavoine and Company, one of the most important companies in decoration of the time. In 1919, he set up his own in his mansion. His collaboration with Jeanne Lanvin allow it to define its aesthetic form, subtle hybridization of styles, all at once ancient and modern. In 1929, workshops Neuilly-Levallois-Perret employ two hundred and twelve craftsmen.

Rateau was by his furniture and decorations one of the most important designers and the most unique of the Art Deco .

Wealthy collectors, businessmen or aristocrats customers Rateau part of the European and American Gotha. Going against the trends of the time, his bronze furniture attracted the finest aesthetes.

In 1928 , he realized the design and decoration of the mansion of Jeanne Lanvin , rue Barbet de Jouy in Paris, where he met with the couturier Paul Poiret . When the building was demolished in 1965 , the whole decoration and furniture of the boudoir, the bedroom and the bathroom, with unparalleled luxury, was given to the Museum of Decorative Arts by Prince Louis de Polignac.
